Description
Down Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with a later refronting in the same century and subsequent additions and alterations. The building is constructed from rubble with stone dressings and is rendered at the rear. It features a two-span double Roman tiled roof with raised coped verges and kneelers on the rear block, along with gable stacks. To the left, there is a triple roll tiled stable, and to the right, a lean-to with a corrugated asbestos roof.
The front of the farmhouse is symmetrical, comprising three storeys and three windows. On the ground floor, there are two 3-light casements with wide ovolo mullions and surrounds, as well as hood moulds. The central feature is a 19th-century gabled porch with scalloped bargeboards and a plank door that includes a glass insertion. The first floor has two windows similar to those on the ground floor, along with a central 2-light window. The second floor has similar 2-light casements situated under the eaves, without hood moulds.
Attached to the left is an early 19th-century two-storey stable, which has two doors and a window with a plank shutter, all featuring segmental heads, along with two loading doors under the eaves. The interior is not accessible. The left return of the farmhouse has an external stair leading to an upper stable door, and the roof has a lower block at the rear. The gable to the right includes a small square attic window with an iron stanchion, and the right return has a similar attic window.
The rear of the building displays a variety of windows, with three on both the ground and first floors, and two on the second floor. Most are casements, except for the fixed lights on the second floor. The rear of the stable features a door in a chamfered frame and a 3-light casement, both with timber lintels. Inside, the rear block contains a winder stair and plank and batten doors. The front left room has a heavy lintel over the fireplace, while the front roof consists of five bays with two rows of purlins, principal rafters, a ridge purlin, and three collars, one of which is cambered. The rear block has four bays and a similar construction.
