Description
Badminton Post Office and four adjoining cottages, along with a gate and gate piers, are located on the north side of High Street in Badminton. The building is dated "AD 1860" and features coursed squared rubble with freestone dressings and quoins. It has a Cotswold stone slate roof with overhanging eaves, decorative cut bargeboards, and finials on the gables. Designed in Gothic style, the structure is single storey with attics in the gables.
The facade consists of a 1:2:1:1:1:2:1 bay arrangement, with the central and double bays advanced and topped with gables. The ground floor has three-light cross windows, while the first floor features two-light casement windows with a diamond glazing pattern, chamfered surrounds, and relieving arches. The bays on either side of the center have two-light oriel windows supported by corbels and located under dormers.
A central segmental headed doorcase with antae and a moulded surround is present, along with single storey gabled porches at the end bays, which have segmental headed doorcases and decorative bargeboards. There is a single storey double porch flanking the central bays, featuring a parapet with a decorative central feature that includes strap work surrounding shields, although the inner doors are blocked. The doors are made of planks.
The center gable displays full ducal armorial bearings, with a coronet and "B" (for Beaufort) along with "AD 1860" on the four outer gables. At the front of the Post Office, there are square, capped ashlar gate piers leading to the road, topped with a wrought iron overthrow; the gate is set five yards in front of the Post Office.
