Description
Churngate Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of rubble and rendered, featuring a double Roman and pantiled roof with gable stacks. The building has a U-plan layout and was originally designed with a through passage. It stands two storeys high and has four windows, all of which are 20th century except for a ground floor right 2-light casement and a 2-light casement in the gable end to the right, along with a large dormer. To the left, there is a plank and batten door with strap hinges, while the second bay from the right features a panelled and glass door leading to the through passage, which has a segmental hood supported by brackets. There is also a single storey lean-to on the left side.
At the rear, the farmhouse has a small gable with a 2-light casement and two 20th century windows at ground floor level. A catslide roof covers the porch to the left, with a door to the right leading to a former dairy. A single storey wing on the right has a door with a frame cut back to allow for the passage of barrels and cart entry, while a two-storey wing on the left has one window, which is a 2-light casement.
Inside, the ground floor features a door frame to the left of the passage that has been cut back for the passage of barrels. There are chamfered beams with bar and scroll stops, and the ground floor room in the north wing has early 18th century panelling. To the right of the fireplace, there is a panelled and glazed cupboard with thick glazing bars and H-hinges. An early 19th century staircase is also present.
