Description
The drinking fountain, located 2 yards southeast of Number 1 Thornbury Castle Street, was built between 1880 and 1881 by Browne and Co of Bristol. It features a combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles, constructed from limestone with a polished granite course. The fountain includes a granite basin set within a nailhead arch. An inscription on the fountain commemorates Lieutenant Hector Maclane of the Royal Horse Artillery, stating that it was erected by public subscription in addition to a window in Thornbury Church. The inscription details that he was taken prisoner while attempting to fetch water for the wounded after the Battle of Maiwand and was subsequently murdered in the camp of Ayoub Khan near Candahar on September 1, 1880.
