Description
The Former National Westminster Bank, located at No 16 on The Plain in Thornbury, dates from around 1860 and is designed in the Italianate style. The building features ashlar stonework with channeled rustication on the ground floor and quoins at the corners. It has a hipped slate roof with overhanging bracketed eaves and a decorative frieze. The structure is two storeys high and has three windows on the upper floor, which are three- and one-light marginal glazing bar sashes with architraves and hoods supported by brackets.
On the ground floor, there are three-light round and segmental headed windows set in slightly advanced bays, with a balustrade above. The central entrance is a panelled door flanked by panelled pilasters, topped with a plain entablature. To the right, there is an attached two-storey wing that is rendered and also has a hipped slate roof. This wing contains one glazing bar sash window and a panel that displays the date 1706, which may be associated with a previous public house on the site.
