Description

A house of late 17th-century origin, substantially remodelled and refronted in 1711 (as indicated by a dated rainwater head on the right return), with 19th-century alterations, a late 19th/early 20th-century addition to the left in a matching style, and 20th-century alterations. The south front is faced with limestone ashlar, while the addition to the left and the side and rear elevations are of rubble construction with stone dressings and quoins. The property has a double Roman tiled hipped roof, with some courses of stone tiles at the eaves to the rear.

The south front is of two storeys and seven windows, all of which are replacement sash windows set in bolection-moulded architraves with sills; the ground floor windows have floating cornices. A central Doric portico with a pediment gives access to a panelled door set within a bolection-moulded architrave. Other features include a moulded plinth, French quoins, and a coved cornice. The addition to the left is of two storeys and four windows with sash windows, and incorporates a canted bay with a hipped roof to the right, featuring a central sash window flanked by two 8-pane sashes. Three lion masks are set into the wall at first floor level. The left return of the addition has two 3-pane windows at ground floor, and an 8-pane sash window at first floor, with a bargeboard to the eaves. The right return has a first-floor sash window matching those on the front, and a 2-light dormer window. Attached to the right is a two-storey block with four windows, including a 6-pane sash window in a bolection-moulded architrave at ground-floor level, with the others being 20th century. The right return of the addition has two 20th-century doors and a first-floor window.

At the rear, the building is of two storeys with an irregular arrangement of windows, including two cross windows at ground floor level with ovolo mullions, transoms and leaded lights under a hood mould, a 6-panelled door in a chamfered surround to the right of centre, and three similar cross windows and a 2-light casement at first floor level. A 20th-century 2-light window is set under the eaves to the right. The addition to the right features a 6-panelled door to the left and a 3-light window to the right, with a matching window at first floor. The block to the left has a 3-light casement at ground floor, two 3-pane lights under the eaves, a gabled dormer, and a single-storey addition with a pitched roof.

Inside, the entrance hall has a stone flagged floor, heavy beams, a large bolection-moulded stone fireplace with a cornice and mantel, and panelled cupboards to the left. There is also an open-well stair to the rear, which was likely moved from its original position, with turned balusters, a carved string and newels, and panelling to the sides. A front right room features a marble fireplace, in an Adam style with urns, swags and a dentil cornice, with shell recesses on each side containing shaped shelves, boxed beams, and shutters to the windows. A front left room has a stone bolection-moulded fireplace, a moulded cornice, and shutters to the windows.
