Description

Seymour Nursing Home is a large villa, now serving as a nursing home, built in the mid-19th century. The building features a stucco exterior with decorative stucco details and an asbestos slate hipped roof that sits above a moulded and bracketed cornice. It has stuccoed end and axial stacks topped with moulded cornices and old clay pots. The villa has a fairly deep plan, likely consisting of two rooms at the front flanking an entrance hall that leads to a stair hall.

The exterior is two storeys tall at the front, with a tall first floor, while the rest of the building is three storeys. The symmetrical three-bay front has rusticated quoins, and the central entrance bay is slightly set forward. The original hornless sash windows, featuring glazing bars and round-arched heads on the first floor, are set within pilastered openings that have consoles and moulded hoods; the right-hand windows are blind. The porch is pedimented with rusticated sides and alternate vermiculated rustication.

To the right of the entrance front, there is a symmetrical three-bay garden and road front with a narrower recessed central bay. The ground floor features canted bays on the left and right, with tripartite windows above. The pilastered openings have moulded hoods on consoles, and the first floor includes sill brackets and segmental arches, with all original hornless sash windows featuring horizontal glazing bars. Other elevations of the building retain many original features. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. This villa is part of a notable group of villas in Mannamead that were developed after 1851.
