Description

Blake Lodge is a large, detached villa dating from the mid-19th century, now used as a health centre. It is constructed of stucco with stucco detailing, featuring a dry slate hipped roof with a moulded eaves cornice and a stepped stack with a stepped cornice over the entrance bay. The building follows a double-depth plan and is arranged over three storeys, displaying a symmetrical 5-bay entrance front where the central bays are broken forward and the central entrance bay is further advanced. The original windows are 12-pane hornless sashes with segmental-arched heads. The north entrance front has a central Ionic distyle-in-antis porch, with a recessed doorway featuring an overlight and a pair of panelled and glazed doors. The entablature of the porch continues backwards to the flanking bays, which have blind details at the left and right. The first floor has moulded architraves, and the second floor has sills on brackets. Moulded cornicing sits above an ornate stucco fascia. There are glazing-bar sashes on the building, with some 20th-century replacements on other elevations, with the exception of the south facade, which features raised architraves with bracketed cornices to three first-floor windows and a decorative wrought-iron balcony over a canted bay window. The interior, though not inspected, is noted to contain fine plaster cornicing, an ornate ribbed ceiling to the hall, original door and shutter joinery, and an open-well turned baluster staircase. The property is part of a significant group of villas that were developed in Mannamead after 1851.
