Description

Number 19, including the attached garden walls and gate piers at the front, is a villa located in a planned group of villas in Plymouth, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of stucco with stucco detailing and features a dry slate hipped roof with widely spaced modillions along the projecting eaves. It has stuccoed end stacks with moulded cornices. The villa has a double-depth plan, likely consisting of two rooms at the front flanking a central entrance hall.

The exterior is two storeys over a basement and has a symmetrical three-window front. The windows, which are late 19th or early 20th century horned sashes without glazing bars, include ground-floor pilastered canted bays with moulded cornices. These bays are linked to a string course above a central pilastered moulded round-arched keyed doorway, which features a plain overlight and a pair of panelled doors. There is also a tripartite doorway that includes a door with margin panes and a glazed surround. The ground-floor windows are flanked by channelled and part vermiculated rustication, with a string course above. The first floor has end pilasters and pilastered window openings with a moulded entablature, with paired windows on the left and right.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The subsidiary features include tall rubble side garden walls that are linked to a low front wall with square gate piers, which have plinths and squat pyramidal caps. This villa is part of a notable group of mid-19th century villas.
