Description

Number 18, including the attached garden walls and gate piers at the front, is a villa built in the mid-19th century as part of a planned group of villas in Plymouth. The building is constructed of stucco with decorative stucco details and features an asbestos slate hipped roof with projecting eaves and a central break topped with a triangular pediment. It has a double-depth plan, likely with two rooms at the front flanking a central entrance hall. The villa stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front, complete with a plinth and end pilasters. The windows are hornless sashes without glazing bars, while the ground-floor windows are pilastered canted bays that have a moulded entablature, which continues as a moulded cornice over a central doorway. This doorway is pilastered and features a keyed round arch with a plain fanlight above a pair of panelled doors. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest. The subsidiary features include side garden walls that return parallel to the front as low coped stuccoed walls, along with square gate piers that have plinths and squat pyramidal caps. This villa is included for its group value as part of a notable collection of mid-19th century villas.
