Description
Radford Bridge and Castle is a mock castle lodge built as an eyecatcher at the lower end of Radford Lake in the early 19th century. Constructed from Plymouth limestone rubble, it features a flat roof behind a rendered embattled parapet and a corbelled embattled stack. The dam supporting the structure has battered walls made of large dressed stone blocks. Designed in the Gothic style to resemble a gatehouse, the building includes a carriageway that runs through its lake side, with a room above. There is a two-storey wing on the seaward side of the carriageway, which has a stack over one corner, and a round stair tower at the opposite corner, along with a single-storey wing on the seaward side. The gate tower features a four-centred arched carriage vault. The north side has a two-window range with 20th-century windows in relatively large openings, while the south side has two "arrow loops" above the carriageway and two narrow windows above one window to its left. Both the stair tower and the single-storey wing also have "arrow loops." The interior has not been inspected.
