Description

The Old Courthouse is a detached house that likely dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century. It is constructed of random rubble with render around the openings, featuring stone copings and pantile roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan that is set at right angles to the road, with a shorter wing extending to the southwest, which was originally longer.

The west front has two storeys, and the right-hand gable end wing is advanced. The windows are 19th-century casements with two and three lights. There are two studded plank and batten doors, with the left-hand door set within a moulded door frame. The porch on the southwest wing is from the early 17th century and was relocated in 1911. It features a moulded segmental-headed opening with imposts, flanked by engaged Corinthian columns that support a frieze and dentil cornice, topped with a restored gable. The spandrels are carved, and the frieze is decorated with rosettes and strapwork motifs on the gable face. The southwest wing has lattice glazed fenestration.

The east front has three windows that retain their original 17th-century chamfered wooden mullions. The interior is not accessible but is reported to have ceiling beams, an open fireplace, and a wooden newel staircase. Historically, it was the 17th-century home of John and Sarah Latch, who are commemorated by a monument in the nearby church. The building has traditional associations with the Bloody Assize.
