Description
The Gate Lodge and Gates south of Coombe Lodge is a building dating from the early 19th century, with the gates added around 1930. The lodge features limewashed render and has tree trunk supports at the eaves, topped with a plain tile roof. It is designed in the Cottage Orne style and is square in plan, standing one storey high. The lodge has trefoil-headed Gothick windows with intersecting Y tracery, featuring 12-pane sashes with reeded sills. The tree trunks are set on octagonal stone blocks, with branches connecting them to create a lattice pattern, forming a loggia around the south and east sides of the building.
The doorway on the east face has raised battening in ogee Gothick shapes and a traceried ogee-headed fanlight. At the northeast corner, beneath the loggia, there is a section of rootwork walling that forms an outshut. The loggia floor is made of patterned pebbles, and the roof is pyramidal with a central octagonal panelled stone stack. There is a later brick outshut at the rear. Inside, the lodge features a Gothick chimney piece and cupboards in the room to the east. The gates consist of two pedestrian gates and a central two-leaf gate adorned with Tudor rose wrought iron panels and urn finials. The gate lodge is historically connected to the former Coombe Lodge, which was replaced by the current house built between 1930 and 1932. The gates were installed at that time.
