Description
Blagdon House is a detached house with a core dating from the 17th century, featuring alterations and additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with stone copings, lias headers, and a 20th-century double Roman tile roof. The house includes a 17th-century rear wing, an addition to the roadside from around 1740, and further rear additions from the 19th century. The west front is two stories high with five windows, all of which are 19th-century wooden cross-casements. There is a central wooden latticework porch with a semi-circular head and a six-raised and fielded panel door, along with end brick stacks.
Inside, the left-hand room on the ground floor features raised and fielded panelling and a bolection moulded fireplace surround from around 1740. A contemporary staircase has a wreathed pine handrail, turned balusters, and carved tread ends. Beneath the staircase, there is a blocked two-light chamfered mullion, and evidence of a former newel staircase can be found in the wall space of the northeast corner of the rear wing. The Rev. Augustus Toplady is noted to have lodged here.
