Description

The Family Pier, located 60 meters east of Brownsea Castle, is a covered pier that dates from the mid-19th century. It extends southeast from the walled garden of Brownsea Castle. The main section of the pier features brick walls with a battlemented design and a glazed roof. Inside, it contains several carved stone panels from the 16th and 17th centuries that were imported from Venice in the mid-19th century.

The terminal structure, which connects to the jetty, has plastered walls and a flat roof with a battlemented parapet. The main range is single-storeyed and is flanked by octagonal turrets with three stages at each end, all designed in the Victorian Tudor style. The central entrance features a 4-centred arched doorway with a hoodmould, above which is a carving of the Lion of Saint Mark. On either side of the doorway are mullioned windows, also with hoodmoulds. At each end of the pier, below the turrets, there are additional 4-centred arched doorways with hoodmoulds. The turrets themselves have blocked 4-centred arched windows on each stage and are topped with battlemented parapets. The pier is a National Trust property and is recorded as a monument in the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England for Dorset.
