Description

Carpenter's Cottage and the National Trust Shop and Information Centre is a former boathouse or workshop that has been repurposed as a shop and information centre, with an attached cottage. The central section of the building likely dates from the 18th century and was extended in the mid-19th century. It features brick walls, some of which are plastered, and a roof that is partly tiled and partly slated, topped with a battlemented parapet at the gable end. The cottage section has plastered stacks and is oriented at right angles to the quay.

The building is two storeys tall. The elevation facing the quay includes a raised gable with offset brick courses at the base of the parapet. On the ground floor, there are a pair of glazed doors, while the first floor has a single glazed door that opens onto a timber balcony, accessed by an external timber stair. The left section features a small brick battlemented porch and one sash window with glazing bars on each floor. The right section, known as Carpenter's Cottage, has plastered walls, a shop window on the ground floor with glazing bars, a timber surround, and an entablature. The first floor has one sash window with vertical glazing bars. This property is managed by the National Trust and is recorded as a monument in the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
