Description

The gatehouse to Brownsea Castle, located at the north corner of the walled garden, was built around 1854. It features light brick walls with stone dressings and has a flat roof adorned with battlemented parapets. The main gatehouse is square in plan and consists of two storeys, with rusticated corner piers and a pointed segmental archway. There are moulded string courses at the first floor and below the parapet. On the east face, there is a window above the arch that has ornamental cast iron glazing and a hoodmould. At the center of the roof, there is a timber clock turret with a battlemented parapet and an ogee-shaped copper roof, which is detailed with crocketted ribs and topped with a weathervane. To the right of the main block, there is a single-storey range that includes a circular turret at the rear, with windows featuring hoodmoulds and 20th-century casements. This property is managed by the National Trust and is recorded as RCHM Monument 3 in Dorset Volume II.
