Description
The Marshwood War Memorial is a First World War village memorial cross dating to around 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and features a plain cross set above a square base with a plinth consisting of two steps. The memorial is situated at the center of the hamlet of Marshalsea, near Marshwood.
The cross has a Latin design with plain, unadorned arms and shaft, rising from a simple base that is supported by two steps, the lower of which has a chamfered top.
On the east side of the base, which faces the road, there is an inscription in enamelled inset lettering that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE / WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918," with names listed below. The top step of the plinth bears the inscription "1939 - 1945," along with a single name. The sides and back of the memorial are plain.
