Description
The Cobb Piers and Walls, including the North Wall, are a Grade I listed stone sea-wall with origins dating back to the medieval period. The Cobb is depicted in a 16th-century sketch. By the end of the 18th century, the wall was dry-built, and a small section of this type of walling can still be seen in the east face of the Victoria Pier. A complete rebuilding of the structure occurred between 1783 and 1829, particularly following the severe gales of 1824 that caused significant damage to the walls. The Victoria Pier was added between 1842 and 1852, and the North Wall was constructed in 1849, as noted in the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, Dorset, Volume I.
