Mill House With Attached Bridge And Boundary Railings

This is an 18th-century detached house with some early 19th-century reconstruction and extension, situated on a stream and incorporating an attached bridge and boundary railings. The front of the house is built of squared and coursed stone, with rendered gables and a stone slate course at the eaves. The rear is rendered, and there are brick stacks. The roof is slate with raised coped verges.

The main block is two storeys with attics and has a central block with a high mansard roof. It has three windows, with a central 12-pane sash dormer above 12-pane sashes at ground and first floors. A central six-panel door is set beneath a painted fanlight, within a pilaster doorcase topped by an open pediment supported on brackets. A low extension is to the left, and a two-story extension and a lower wing are to the right, all rising directly from the stream and accessed via the bridge. The left wing has a three-light casement window, and its end gable features a small brick stack and a large four-light sash window. The two-story extension to the right has 12-pane sash windows set in deep reveals, with a three-light casement window with early leading at ground floor. The wing beyond has a blocked wide, full-height opening and a half-hipped gable end.

The rear of the main block, facing a mill, has two widely spaced raked dormers and a central first-floor sash window. Ground-floor windows are also widely spaced, with a further sash window to the right of the central door. The remains of a verandah are visible, along with a one-meter-wide stone pavement and a stone gutter. A small eaves light and a six-pane window are present. The lower unit has various windows and a rooflight. The wing to the right has a door and one window.

The ground-floor windows retain original shutters. The house is approached by a bridge with stone slab paving. Subsidiary features include cast-iron railings on a weathered stone coping, extending across the front of the house. A stone wall, crenellated at the top, continues beyond the railings to a second bridge and a doorway. The railings return on a low parapet either side of the door.
