Description

A row of three houses with shops, dating to the early 19th century, located on St Thomas Street in Weymouth. The buildings are constructed using Flemish bond brickwork and have slate mansard roofs, although these have been modified on numbers 27 and 28. Each house is three storeys and an attic, with a single window front. Number 26 features a wide tripartite sash dormer with a flat roof. Numbers 26 and 27 have two-storey oriels, while number 28 retains the original full-height bow design. The top floor windows have 6:9:6-pane sashes, detailed with dentil cornices. Numbers 27 and 28 retain 8:12:8-pane sashes to the upper floors, but number 26 and the ground floor of number 28 have lost their glazing bars. Number 26 has an elaborate late 19th-century shop front complete with contemporary shutters, decorative cast-iron cresting, panelled pilasters and double consoles. Number 27 features a plate-glass shop front between pilasters, deep consoles, and a shallow fascia with remnants of a dentil cornice. Number 28 has an original six-panel door, with a reversed fan transom light in deep reveals, set within an arched opening at the right, accessed by three steps. Architectural details include a plain band above the first floor, a moulded cornice, a blocking course and a coped parapet. Each house has a brick stack to the left. The interior plan, as recorded by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments and Ancient Buildings, reveals a transverse staircase dividing the rooms, along with service additions to the rear. The example shows former domestic architecture of the Melcombe Regis streets.
