Description
The Church of the Holy Spirit and St Edward is a Roman Catholic church built in 1904, designed by Canon A Scoles. It features walls made of Purbeck Stone and a modern tiled roof. The church is laid out with a nave, chancel, and a west (liturgical south) transept, topped by an open bell-cote over the crossing. It is constructed in a "Decorated" Gothic style. The north wall, referred to as the "west" wall, has a central arched doorway with a sculptured tympanum above it, along with a large traceried window. The nave is adorned with two-light traceried windows. Inside, the walls are plastered, and the nave and chancel have canted plaster ceilings, with the nave ceiling featuring wood ribs. There are paintings from around 1926 behind the high altar and the chapel altar in the transept, with the one behind the high altar depicting Saint Edward of Corfe Castle. Additionally, there are Purbeck Stone boundary walls along Victoria Avenue and Rempstone Road, topped with "rustic" capping and modern iron gates.
