Description
The Swanage War Memorial is a war memorial that was erected in 1920 and reconstructed and re-sited in 2014. It is designed as a large, tapering cairn made of weathered, cut and squared Purbeck stone, which is mortared. The memorial stands on a base of three stone steps.
On the east face, there is an inset stone tablet inscribed in painted black lettering that reads: "In Memory of / Swanage Men / who fell in the Great War / 1914-1918." Above this, there is another similar tablet that states: "In Memory of The / Swanage Men and Women / Who Lost Their Lives in / The War / 1939-1945." The other three faces of the memorial feature plaques that bear the names of the Fallen. As of 2017, the memorial is situated on a modern tarmac surface.
