Description

The King Alfred Memorial, erected in 1862 by John Mowlem, is located on Shore Road. This memorial features a granite Tuscan column that stands on two stone steps. It is inscribed with the words: "In commemoration of a great naval battle fought with the Danes in Swanage Bay by Alfred the Great. AD 877" and "Erected by John Mowlem. AD 1862." At the top of the column are four cannon balls that were brought from the Crimean War. This design element was also used around the tennis courts of Purbeck House. The memorial is a prominent feature of the sea front.
