Description

Eldon Terrace comprises a row of nine estate cottages built in 1894 for the third Earl of Eldon. The terrace is situated in Swanage, with No. 13 Kings Road East set back on the eastern side. The cottages are constructed of rock-faced coursed limestone with a red clay tile roof. The roof features exposed rafter and purlin ends, and tile coping to the verge parapets. Axial and gable-end stacks are present with weathered set-offs, red brick shafts, and projecting flues.

The plan consists of nine cottages, arranged in pairs, with each pair sharing a rear wing incorporating a small outhouse and walled yard.

The north front has 16 windows, with an additional two bays set back on the left. Each cottage is two bays wide, featuring 4-pane sashes. The ground floor windows and doorways have cambered arches, rectangular overlights and various glazed and panelled doors. The south rear elevation shows each house sharing a large gabled wing with a neighbouring cottage, and a small single-storey outhouse at the end, with yard walls to the rear.

Limestone garden area walls front the terrace, incorporating saddle-back coping and gate piers.

The interiors have not been inspected. Eldon Terrace represents a well-designed example of late 19th-century estate housing, exhibiting group value.
