Description
This is an early 17th-century shop, located on the west side of The Square in Corfe Castle. It was originally one house and is attached to Hollands' Shop. A date stone on the front wall indicates the year 1616. The building is constructed of rubble stone with a stone slate roof, and features a stone stack at the right end.
The shop has one storey and an attic. The front includes a ledged door set under a 4-centred timber arch, covered by a flat timber-moulded canopy supported on shaped brackets. A small bow shop window with leaded lights and a moulded cornice is positioned to the right of the door, alongside a further casement window with leaded lights. The attic is lit by a gabled dormer window featuring casements similar to those below.
Inside, the shop retains a fireplace with a stone 4-centred arch, and nearby is a circular recess, which may have been the site of a spiral stair. Some exposed ceiling beams are also present. Currently managed by the National Trust, the building is recorded in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Dorset, Volume II.
