Description

This is a range of 18th and early 19th century buildings on East Street, with Nos 41 and 43 having earlier origins in the 17th century, and most of the frontages replaced in the mid-19th century with stucco. The roofs are pitched slate, with red brick stacks. The buildings are two storeys high and contain six windows on the first floor. Three windows have glazing bars, and three have shouldered architraves. Nos 45 and 47 have rusticated quoins. No 41 has a door with flush panels, panelled reveals and soffit, and a shopfront featuring a moulded cornice, turned glazing bars, and an oblong fanlight over a reeded transom. No 43 also has a shopfront with a moulded cornice, turned glazing bars, and panelled pilasters. Some of the rear windows retain sash windows with marginal glazing bars. The rear of No 45 was formerly a smithy and contains a floor of herringbone brickwork and stone setts. A rubble extension with a stone slate roof and a tall red brick stack is located at the rear of No 49. These buildings are part of a group that includes Nos 37 to 47 (odd), the Unitarian Chapel, the Public Library, and Nos 53 to 57 (odd).
