Description

Abbey House is a detached house that was formerly a farmhouse and part of the monastic buildings located east of the cloister. It incorporates materials from the 14th century, with alterations from the 17th and 19th centuries. The exterior features rubble-stone and dressed stone walls, topped with a slate roof that has stone gable copings, a scroll-kneeler at the left end, and a half-hip at the right end. There is a stone stack with a castellated parapet on the left gable and a brick stack from the 18th century to the right of center.

The house has two storeys and dormers, with four windows on the first floor. Ground floor openings include a square 19th-century two-light bay window with a hipped slate roof, a three-light cast-iron casement with a wooden lintel above, a porch with a flush panel wooden door and hipped slate roof, another three-light bay window with a hipped slate roof, a small rectangular medieval window, and a three-light wooden casement. On the first floor, there are two three-light 19th-century cast-iron casements with wooden cills, along with two three-light wooden casements. The north ranges, dating from the 17th century, feature stone gable coping and an apex-block, with two-light wooden casements on the west side.

Inside, there are two back-to-back fireplaces with dressed stone jambs and saw-cut wooden lintels, as well as a wooden lintel with a large chamfer and stepped stops. The adjoining wing has a stone slab roof and a very tall gable-end chimney with a castellated parapet and set-offs. Additionally, fragments of 12th-century sculpture from the abbey are built into the structure.
