Description

Bratton Farmhouse is a detached house, originally a farmhouse, dating back to the 16th century with later modifications. It is constructed of roughly coursed local stone rubble, with a plain clay tile roof, simple eaves, and brick chimney stacks. The house is arranged in an “L” shape, with a two-storey, six-bay east elevation featuring irregular window placement. The windows are mostly casements of various types, including 3-light small-pane casements in the upper bays 1 and 2, and in both levels of bay 4; horizontal bar casements in the upper bay 3 and lower bay 6; leaded casements with iron framed opening lights in the upper bay 6 and both levels of bay 5; a 16-pane sash window in the lower bay 1; and 1960s French doors in the lower bay 2. A south-facing return wing features mid-20th century casements in the gable. To the north-west corner is the entrance, situated west of a double garage. Above the garage doors is a casement window, and at the west end of the wing stands a single-storey studio, extending to the full roof height. A 6-panel flush entrance door is set under a moulded stone hood supported by corbel brackets. The interior features deep chamfered beams with step and runout stops, a circular stone staircase with a stone stairlight, a plank partition, a 16th-century doorway, and doors from various periods. The roof structure includes collar beam and collar-and-tie beam trusses of an early pattern; traces of a curing chamber remain in the north gable. The property was likely built on the site of a Saxon manor.
