Description
The Old Toll House is a detached house that was formerly a toll house, built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from cut and squared Cary stone and features a hipped plain clay tile roof with a brick chimney stack. The building has two storeys and a five-bay east elevation. The first bay consists of a single-storey lean-to, while bays three, four, and five are 20th-century additions designed to match the original structure. Bay two is a projecting, chamfered wing with two-light small-pane casements on each face, and a former doorway in the southeast splay that has been blocked by a matching window. The upper windows in bays four and five are set into raked dormers, and the other windows have voussoired flat arches. There is a studded boarded door in the south wall of the lean-to, and a 20th-century flat-roofed extension on the west side. The road was turnpiked in 1765 by the Vale of Blackmoor Trust and was transferred to the Wincanton Trust in 1824, which may indicate the date of construction for the building.
