Description
The Abbotsbury War Memorial is a granite structure located in the churchyard of St Nicholas Church. It is situated to the north-west of the Grade I listed medieval church and to the south-east of the Grade II* listed late 16th century Manor House. The memorial features an ashlar granite cross with a Celtic head, decorated with interlace and knotwork carved in relief. The cross is mounted on a tapering shaft approximately 1.5 meters high, which rises from a trapezoidal granite plinth. The shaft bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF MEN OF ABBOTSBURY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES DURING THE WAR 1914-1919." The top of the plinth has a hollow chamfer where it connects with the shaft. There are 13 names inscribed on the front of the plinth, which has a tooled outer edge and sits on a square granite base with a pebble and concrete foundation.
