Description
The stables and cart-shed located immediately west of Baglake Farmhouse are a detached structure dating from the 18th century or earlier. The building features rubble-stone walls that rise to 1.5 metres in height, with chalk block walls above. It has a thatched roof made of wheat reed, with gable ends. There are two loops in the chalk that descend into the rubble base, and a plank door with a wooden lintel is situated between them. At the back of the stable, there is a two-leaf plank-shuttered window.
The elevation facing the yard, from the east, includes double-plank doors that serve as a garage and four bays of the cart-shed supported by three 20th-century brick piers. There are two eyebrow dormers, which were formerly used for lofts, with the right-hand dormer featuring a 20th-century clock face. The structure displays rubble masonry and a straight joint, along with a stable door that has a wooden frame and a concrete lintel. The window has two-leaf plank shutters with a square frame that includes ovolo moulding, and there is a square opening without shutters.
The roof construction of the cart shed consists of collar-trusses that are halved and double-pegged, along with two sets of butt-purlins. This building is significant as a vernacular farm structure due to its local materials, overall intactness, location, and its grouping with other buildings.
