Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Swiss Cottage are a pair of semi-detached cottages, likely originally built as one house, dating from the 18th century. No. 1 has been altered in the 19th century and is positioned at right angles to the road. It features plastered walls with some "mock" timber framing and a hipped thatched roof that runs parallel to the road. There is a brick stack near the center of the roof. The building is two storeys high, with the left section of the elevation set back from the road. In the angle, there is a lean-to porch with a tiled roof supported by timber balusters on a brick base, leading to a part-glazed panelled door. To the right of the porch, which is the original gable end, there is a canted bay window on the ground floor with a tiled roof and casements that include glazing bars. A small casement with glazing bars is located on the first floor. The south elevation features a two-storeyed canted bay with a thatched roof, containing a casement with glazing bars on the ground floor and a smaller casement on the first floor.
No. 2, which is furthest from the road, has brick walls and a hipped thatched roof. It is one storey high with attics. The entrance includes a part-glazed door in a rustic tiled porch. The ground floor has two casements, one with horizontal glazing bars and the other with bars only in the upper panes. The attic features a half dormer with casements that include glazing bars. There is also a lean-to extension at the right end made of brick, with a slate roof and one casement with glazing bars. Overall, the cottages present a picturesque appearance.
