Description
Welcombe Thatch is a detached cottage, likely dating from the 18th century, situated in Witchampton village. It was originally two cottages. The walls are plastered cob, with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the left end. There is a brick chimney stack at the right end, and another to the right of the front door. The left section of the cottage is two storeys high, while the right section is single-storey with an attic. The cottage is set at a right angle to the road.
The left section features a ledged door within a small, rustic thatched porch. The ground floor has one casement window with a horizontal bar, and two 20th-century casement windows. The first floor has three casement windows, one with horizontal glazing bars, and another with a central horizontal bar. The right section has a second, similarly rustic thatched porch, the doorway of which is now blocked. The ground floor of this section has one 20th-century casement window, and the attic has a half-dormer window with casements containing lead lights. A slate-roofed lean-to is at the right end of the cottage. A 20th-century rear extension, with a double Roman tiled roof, including a garage, extends from the left end.
Inside, the main ground floor room contains a large open fireplace with a timber lintel, and some exposed ceiling beams. The original roof structure appears to be intact.
