Description

50 West Bay Road is a building dating from 1837, part of a planned group called "Portville," developed by Samuel Gundry junior, who was associated with a twine manufacturing dynasty. The building is constructed of stucco and features a low-pitched slate roof with wide eaves supported by cut brackets. It has two storeys and is characterized by angle pilasters with incised line decoration. On the first floor, there are two sash windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor has two French casements with marginal glazing bars and oblong fanlights. A six-bay cast iron verandah with vine leaf trellis work enhances the façade, and there is an entrance wing that includes a contemporary two-panelled door. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 48 to 56 (even), the coachhouses and stables of Nos 48 to 56, the dwarf wall and gates to the front gardens of Nos 48 to 62, as well as No 62, No 64, and No 64A.
