Description
Elm Grove House is an early to mid 18th century building that has undergone modifications, likely in the early 19th century, particularly to its facade. The house is finished in stucco and features a wide eaves cornice, with a tiled roof, although there is a double span slate roof at the rear. The north side has a coped gable end and a central chimney. The roof levels are slightly different, suggesting that it may have originally been two houses.
The building is two storeys high and has four windows, which are sash windows with glazing bars set in moulded architraves. The bottom windows and the two southern windows on the first floor have narrow labels above them. There is a small window on the north side of the ground floor facade, which is a deeply set sliding casement with an arched label above. The entrance door features a pediment above, similar to the architraves of the windows, and has a cornice with a six-panelled door.
Elm Grove House is part of a group that includes the four street lamps, Church Lane House, its walls and gate piers, as well as Nos 14 to 28 (even), Nos 34 and 36 with its garden wall, and the wall opposite Serampore Place, along with the walls to No 35 and to the bungalow.
