Description

Southover House is a detached farmhouse, originally built in the mid-17th century, with an early 19th-century addition set at a right angle to the north-west. The walls are a mix of banded flint and stone, with roughcast rendering. The roof is thatched with gable ends, and it has brick stacks; one at the left-hand gable, one on the ridge towards the centre, both dating to the 19th century, and one at the right-hand gable, which is 20th century.

The front elevation has two storeys and five windows. The ground-floor windows are 2-light wooden casements with glazing bars, dating to the 20th century and with lowered sills. The first-floor windows are 19th-century, also 2-light casements with glazing bars. No blocked windows are visible. The west gable end exposes the building materials. It features stone mullions with hollow-chamfered edges and lead lights; a 3-light mullion to the ground floor, a 2-light mullion above, and a single, smaller light in the attic. A plank-and-muntin door, studded and dating to the 19th century, is on the gable wall, sheltered by a 20th-century stone porch with Tuscan stone columns.

The rear walls of the original range are constructed of chalk blocks and have a catslide thatched roof. These rear walls have 2-light cast-iron casements with 19th-century lead quarries. The rear addition is built of banded brick and stone. This range includes a gable-end brick stack, two 19th-century 2-light cast-iron casements with leaded quarries, and wood lintels. A 19th-century door in the rear angle is flush-panelled with two top lights, and is situated within a segment-headed porch.

Two brick gate piers flank the entrance. They have gadrooned stone finials on moulded bases, all dating to the 19th century. An iron gate is set between these piers, terminating on a brick pier. Attached spear-top iron railings extend for approximately 28 metres to the east, terminating on brick piers.
