Description

ST 7814 STURMINSTER NEWTON MARKET PLACE (EAST SIDE)

8/162 Swan Hotel 4.10.60 G.V. II

Hotel, mid-C18. Brick (basically Flemish bond but extensive use made of rubbed and gauged brickwork together with header bond in vitrified brick). Tiled roof with brick stacks. 2 storeys, 8 bays. An unusual classical facade. 2 central bays carry a pediment. The two outer bays are flanked by Doric pilasters bearing Tudor roses; the abaci of which are continuous with an eaves cornice. Similar pilasters flank the two central bays but a central pilaster carries a complete Doric entablature into the tympanum of the pediment. The fenestration is of sashes with glazing bars, mainly in moulded frames, throughout. Many of the ground floor windows are now under flat arches but appear to have formerly been under round arches with keystones. The upper floor windows are all under segmental brick arches with brick keystones. Bay one has a C20 entrance. Bay 4 has a round headed door in a wooden architrave under a flat hood supported on pairs of shaped brackets. Bay 8 has a segmental arch over a passage to the rear. There is a string course between the storeys. In the tympanum are two niches and a brick roundel within which is a painting of a swan. "RCHM, Dorset Vol III", HMSO, 1970, p 279, no 25.
