Description
Dairy Bungalows, built around 1920 by Sir Ernest Debenham, were originally the central dairy of Briantspuddle Farm and are now four houses. The buildings feature concrete block walls, some of which are rendered, and thatched roofs with brick stacks. They are arranged in a quadrangle, with two projecting wings that are two storeys high with attics, and a single-storey rear range that has octagonal turrets in the corners, which were formerly cheese rooms.
Nos 29 and 30 are the projecting wings, each with recessed porches that have ledged doors. The ground floor of these wings features one timber casement window with iron sashes and lead lights in the walls facing the quadrangle, while the first floor has three similar windows. Each attic contains one dormer window. The front gable end elevations of each house have a projecting square bay window with a thatched roof and similar casements on the ground floor, two similar windows on the first floor, and one in the attic.
The central single-storey range, Nos 1 and 2 Dairy Bungalows, has a slightly higher section in the centre that includes a recessed loggia and part-glazed entrance doors. It also has casement windows with iron sashes and lead lights. In front of the building, there is a retaining wall made of rubble stone with rounded brick capping. This group of buildings is an attractive example of the "Garden City" tradition.
