Description
Cottage known as Briantspuddle Cruck Cottage, with origins dating back to the late 15th century and extended in the 17th century. It was originally designed as an open hall with cruck trusses. The walls are made of plastered cob on a base of brick and stone, topped with a thatched roof. There are brick stacks, one of which is rendered. The cottage has one storey and attics, with a front wall that is buttressed. A modern ledged door is located under a pentice with a stone slate roof. The ground floor features four casement windows with glazing bars, while the attic has three dormers with casements that also have glazing bars.
Inside, the house was originally open to the roof and spans three bays, with some true cruck trusses still visible. An intermediate floor was added in the late 16th century. The western room contains deep chamfered ceiling beams and a chimney stack from that period. The eastern room and its end chimney stack were added in the late 17th century, with traces of a bread oven or curing chamber next to this stack. Both chimney stacks have large open fireplaces, which are now partly built up, featuring oak lintels.
