Description
Dairy farm buildings dating to 1914, designed by H Munro Cautley in association with Halsey Ricardo for Sir Ernest Debenham’s model dairy farm. The complex includes a cow shed, feed shed, store, barn, calving boxes, calf courts, and a covered yard. The buildings are constructed of brick, concrete block, with steel stancheons and trusses, and have roofs of asbestos tile, patent interlocking tile, black glazed pantile, and patent roof lights.
The layout is symmetrical, intended to align with the adjacent dairy building and associated bungalows. The cow shed originally comprised 17 bays linked to the dairy, though four northern bays have since been demolished. The cow shed connects to the feed shed at its south end, with the cowshed roof extended over the north range and mirrored on the west side. The south range features gabled ends and a loft for a granary and grinding. An east-facing five-bay corn barn and a similar store are situated to the west. A covered yard is located to the east of the cow shed, featuring an 11-bay steel truss gabled roof with the corn barn at the south end. Entry to the yard is via the north and south ends of the eight-bay calving boxes, while a seven-bay range of calf courts is situated at the north end, both having hipped pantile roofs.
The cow shed features concrete block wall panels between stancheons, high-level steel frame windows, triangulated steel frame trusses, glazed ridge lights with louvred vents, and a tiled floor with concrete mangers on either side of the central milking floor and outer feeding passages. The feed shed, barn, and roof store are constructed of brick with glass pantile roof lights. Cart entries are located in the gables of the barn and store, each with concrete lintels and a Diocletion window above, all with metal frames. The south side of the feed shed has irregular window placement with double ledge and braced doors, segmental brick heads to steel framed casements, and gable end windows. The barn and store have two-light windows with a central vent in each bay on the south side. The covered yard's roof gables feature vertical board facing. The calving box and calf court ranges are of concrete block panels with brick piers, steel segmental arches over vertical board doors, and contribute to the group value with the main dairy building.
