Description
The Bell Cliff Retaining Wall, along with its railings and the steps leading up to Nos. 7 and 8 Broad Street, dates from the late 18th century. This high wall is constructed of colourwashed stone rubble and features a capping that extends northeast and then west from the premises occupied by the Information Bureau on Marine Parade. The wall is topped with 19th-century railings that are looped in pairs. A lower wall extends further northeast from the corner, enclosing an L-shaped flight of steps that lead up to higher ground before Nos. 7 and 8 Broad Street. At the base of the steps, there are painted brick gate piers with capping. The steps are partly made of blue lias stone, and additional 19th-century railings flank the innermost angle of the steps. The Bell Cliff Retaining Wall and Railings, along with Nos. 4 to 10 (consecutive) and 10A Broad Street, form a cohesive group.
