Description
Chalmington House is a large house set in its own grounds, possibly originating from the late 16th century, with significant rebuilding and extension in the 19th century, including the infill of a rear courtyard. The exterior features rubble-stone walls that are rendered, with two stone strings and a moulded stone parapet with a bowtell design. The roof is slate with gable ends, and the front has three gables topped with barley-sugar finials. There are rendered and brick chimney stacks on the west end wall and along the main ridge.
The main south elevation has two and a half storeys and includes seven sash windows with horizontal glazing bars, flat architraves, stone cills, and console brackets beneath. At the center is a tower porch that is also two and a half storeys high, featuring a front doorway with a moulded architrave, a six-panel door with two toplights above, dating from the 19th century. There are extensions to the house at the east end that are at right angles to the main structure, characterized by triple gables and six barley-sugar finials. To the right of a secondary porch is an oriel window with transomed stone mullions and a double-crenellated string. The tower porch includes a 19th-century door with a depressed arch head and a label above.
