Description
Nos 14 and 14A, North Street, are a house and shop dating to around 1600, significantly altered in the 1840s. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed Purbeck stone, with a pitched slate roof, projecting eaves, and rendered stacks. It is two storeys and attics in height. The front facade features five ranges of flush-framed sash windows. A canted bay with sash windows is located on the ground floor. The main entrance has a six-panelled door within panelled reveals, set within a doorcase featuring reeded pilasters and moulded consoles supporting a flat hood.
At the rear of No. 14, an original stone doorway remains, featuring chamfered jambs and a round heart-shaped head. This wing also contains collar-beam trusses. Inside No. 14A, an original muntin and plank partition is present on the ground floor, and an original round-headed doorway, now blocked, is found in the east wall. A partly reconstructed original fireplace is located at the south end of the property.
Nos 14 and 14A are part of a group that includes Nos 16 to 22 (even) and 22A.
