Description
Lloyds Bank is a bank building dated 1865, located on St Mary Street in Weymouth. It features a dignified Italianate facade in the style of architect Barry, characterized by slightly recessed center bays and an unbroken cornice. The building has three storeys and a window arrangement of 1:3:1, with plain sash windows on the upper floors and fixed glazing on the ground floor.
The first-floor sash windows are framed by moulded architraves and feature narrow panels with rosettes in the center three lights, all set on moulded and fluted sills. These windows have eared architraves with flared feet, positioned above a deep sill band adorned with guilloche decoration. The outer windows have dentil cornices, with triangular pediments above them.
The facade includes channelled rustication with alternating quoins on the outer bays, while the center windows, which are slightly set back, are flanked by channelled pilasters topped with a form of Ionic capital. The ground floor has five arched openings with moulded architraves and keys, set back on deep sills at plinth level. The left bay features a 20th-century pair of doors beneath an enriched architrave and a decorated tympanum with an oculus, along with a transom inscribed 'BANK'. The right bay has been altered to accommodate a cash dispensing machine.
The windows are separated by channelled pilasters with simple caps, and the entablature has a modillion cornice that appears slightly less robust compared to the rest of the design. Brick stacks are present at each gable end.
