Description
No. 83 on St Thomas Street is a house with a shop, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork, which is painted on the front, and has a slate roof with a steep mansard slope at the rear and a ridge roof at the front. The building is three storeys tall with an attic and has two windows, all of which are sash windows. The second floor has four-pane flat-roofed dormers set on stone sills, while the first floor has canted plain oriels with moulded cornices. The ground floor has a full-width 20th-century shop front. There is a moulded stone cornice, a blocking-course, and a coped parapet at the top.
To the left, the return wall is exposed due to the adjacent building being set back and features two stacks connected by a straight parapet. There is a two-light casement window with a transom under a segmental head, situated above a square, flat-roofed glazed extension at first-floor level. The rear wall includes a six-pane window and an escape door above a 16-pane sash window and a two-light casement, all set under rubbed brick arches, along with a flat-roofed extension. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England suggests that the first floor may have originally had a verandah. The interior has not been inspected.
