Description
No. 88 St Thomas Street is a house with a shop located at the end of a row, also facing School Street. It was built in the early 19th century and features painted Flemish bond brickwork and a slate mansard double roof. The building has two storeys and an attic with two windows. There are 2-light and 4-light raking dormers above a 12-pane sash window in a moulded flush box, as well as a bow oriel window with 8:12:8-pane sashes and a dentil cornice.
On the ground floor, there is a late 19th-century dentilled fascia on panelled pilasters with consoles, which extends the full depth of the School Street frontage, including a lower one-bay wing. The broad panes have deep transom lights, and the corner pane is splayed, while the fascia and cornice continue at a right angle above. The upper structure is supported by a series of cast-iron columns inside the glazing. The return gable features two plain sashes at the first floor and two stacks, connected by a straight parapet. The lower rear wing has a single sash at the first floor and an additional small stack. The interior has not been inspected.
