Description

Masonic Hall, located at number 13 Frederick Place, was built in 1816, with its front completed in 1834 by CB Fookes. The building features a stucco front and a painted brick return, topped with a slate roof. Its design includes a Greek Doric temple front with fluted Doric half-columns and square moulded caps on the pilasters. The central entrance consists of an 8-panel door with a decorative fanlight above, framed by a Gibbsian surround, and flanked by deep round-headed niches. The entrance is accessed by five steps, enclosed by spearhead railings that return at the ends and include a central gate. The return side facing School Street has five plain brick piers with sunk panels and blank lights, along with stooled stone sills, situated on a semi-basement that has three openings with cambered heads and paired plank doors. The building features brick dentil eaves and a hipped roof at the outer end, with a steeper pitch than the front pediment.

Inside, the lower floor is approximately one meter below pavement level and has a concrete floor, with a central row of timber posts and stone dividing walls. A large late 19th-century addition has been made at the rear of the property. The upper hall's interior was not inspected. The Greek front is considered very accurate, inspired by the Hephaisteion in Athens, likely based on drawings by Stewart and Revett.
