Description
The Parish Church of St Andrew is a Grade II* listed building located in Lulworth Park. The tower dates from the late 15th century, while the rest of the church was rebuilt in 1864 by architect John Hicks. The church features rubble stone walls and tiled roofs with parapets at the gables. It consists of a nave, chancel, south porch, and west tower.
The tower has four stages, with battlemented parapets and corner pinnacles. There is a corbel table below the parapet, and angle buttresses with pinnacles that rise to the base of the belfry. The belfry has tall, narrow traceried windows, with large stone corbels positioned between them. The lowest stage of the tower contains two-light windows. The body of the church is designed in the Gothic Revival style, featuring two-light traceried windows in both the nave and chancel.
Inside, the tower arch is of a depressed four-centred form, with canopied niches on either side. The font, dating from the 15th century, is octagonal with panelled sides. In the chancel, there is a carved Royal Arms from the 18th century, along with a hatchment on the south wall. Other fittings date from the 19th century. The churchyard contains several 18th-century headstones, some of which display fine lettering. The tower is noted for its architectural quality.
