Description

The Church of Saint Mary is a Grade II* listed building located on Westow Church Lane. The church features a 15th-century tower with a nave and chancel added in 1864 by the architects Mallinson and Healey. It is constructed from limestone rubble and ashlar, with a Westmorland slate roof, and the Victorian section is designed in a Geometric style.

The west tower is flanked by diagonal buttresses and has a blocked west door with a crude hood-mould. It includes three 19th-century stepped cinquefoil-headed lights set in an original 15th-century frame, along with a small square-headed chamfered window above. A string course runs along the tower, which has two-light belfry windows on each face and an embattled parapet.

The south porch features a double door beneath a massive concrete lintel with a triangular overlight. The nave has two-light pointed windows, while the chancel includes a priests' door on the south side, with a lancet window to the left and a two-light pointed window to the right. The north side has a vestry with a two-light square-headed window, and the east end of the chancel is adorned with a three-light pointed window.

Inside, there is a small 12th-century panel depicting the Crucifixion, which is incorporated into a memorial for a former incumbent on the west wall of the nave. A Saxon cross head is located in the north-west corner of the nave, and a Norman tub font with cable moulding is present. The chancel also contains a black marble memorial to George Montaigne, who died in 1669.
